Mango, called as the king of fruits is the national fruit of India and it is one of the most cultivated tropical fruits in the world. It owns considerable presence in the religious and spiritual heritage of the country.

Type: stony fruit

Season: late February to early September

Facts about mango:

  • The king of fruits has been around for at least 6000 years.
  • This fruit was described in the ancient Sanskrit literature. E.g. in valmiki’s Ramayana.
  • The mango was the fruit of the kings in ancient india. Because kings used to pride themselves on the possession of large mango gardens.
  • In vedic scriptures, mango has been highly appreciated because of its medicinal and therapeutic qualities. All parts of the tress are used for various purposes.

The bark, leaf, flowers, fruit, and a seed offer multiple health benefits.

  • The importance of mangoes in Buddhism was underlined by the fact that lord Buddha chose to rest under the shade of a mango tree and Buddhist monks took mangoes with them wherever they went.
  • Megasthenes and Hsiun tsang, the earliest writer- travelers to ancient India also wrote about how the kings in ancient times planted mango trees along the roadsides as a symbol of prosperity.
  • Mango blossom are integral parts of saraswati worship.
  • Jain goddess ambika is depicted to be sitting under a mango tree.
  • The mughals relished their favourite fruit mango with Jahangir and Shah jahan.

Who awarded their khansamahs for their various creations like aam panna, aam ka lauz, and aam ka meetha pulao.

  • Nur jahan used to mix mangoes and roses to create legendary wines.
  • The peshwa of Marathas, raghunath peshwa, planted 10 million mango trees as a sign of supremacy of Marathas.
  • Rabindranath tagore was extremely fond of this fruit and wrote several poems on the fragrant flowers of mangoes.
